What is SaaS?
Software as a Service
Definition
SaaS — software as a service — is a model in which software runs on the provider’s infrastructure and customers use it over the internet, usually by subscription, without installing or maintaining servers.
The formal definition
SaaS is one of the three common cloud service models, alongside PaaS and IaaS: you use the provider’s application and never deal with servers or infrastructure.
Questions to ask before buying SaaS
- Where is our data stored, and how is it isolated from other customers?
- How are backups and restores handled?
- Can we export all of our data?
- What happens to our data if the subscription ends?
Example
A company using CRM as SaaS just signs up and starts working on day one; updates arrive without involving its IT team.
