What is Multi-tenancy?
Multi-tenancy
Definition
Multi-tenancy is an architecture in which one instance of software serves several organisations (tenants) while each tenant’s data and settings stay fully separated from the others.
Why multi-tenancy
In the cloud, installing a separate copy for every customer is expensive and hard to maintain. Multi-tenancy lets every customer always run the latest version at lower infrastructure cost.
Data isolation
The key requirement is strict data isolation. Common approaches:
- A separate database per tenant
- A separate schema
- Shared tables with a tenant-ID column and mandatory filtering, ideally enforced by row-level security in the database itself
Example
Two companies work on fidar.cloud. Each has its own address, and no query runs without the tenant filter, so one company’s data never appears in the other’s reports.
In Fidar
Fidar’s cloud edition is multi-tenant, with isolation enforced in the application and the database. If you need full physical separation, the on-premise edition is single-tenant.
