What is On-premise?

On-premises software

Definition

On-premise software is installed and run on an organisation’s own servers, inside its network — as opposed to cloud software running on the provider’s infrastructure.

When on-premise makes sense

  • Legal or internal requirements to keep data inside the network (banks, public bodies)
  • Factories with unreliable internet or isolated networks
  • A need for full control over when updates are applied

Hidden costs

Servers, backups, security, updates and technical staff are the organisation’s responsibility. These costs belong in any comparison with a cloud subscription.

Example

A pharmaceutical plant installs its ERP on the plant’s own servers for internal compliance reasons and applies updates monthly after testing them in a staging environment.

On-premise in Fidar

Fidar’s on-premise edition is the same product as the cloud: one-command install, controlled updates and a fully offline mode. Compare both in cloud or on-premise.
