What is Lead?

Sales lead

Definition

Lead — in sales — is a person or company that has shown interest in your product or service but has not yet been qualified for real need, budget and authority to buy.

Lead, opportunity, customer

  • Lead: someone who filled in a web form, handed over a business card at a trade show or called in.
  • Opportunity (deal): a lead that has been qualified and has a realistic chance of a sale with an amount and approximate date.
  • Customer: someone who has bought.

Common lead sources

Website, trade shows, referrals from existing customers, inbound calls and campaigns. Recording each lead’s source shows which channel brings the best leads.

Example

A trade show yields 80 business cards. All go into the CRM as leads with the source “trade show”; after the first call, 12 become opportunities.
