What is WMS?

Warehouse Management System

Definition

WMS — a warehouse management system — manages not only how much stock you have but exactly where each item sits, down to aisle and shelf, along with receiving, put-away, picking and shipping.

Inventory software vs WMS

Basic inventory software says “we have 120 units of item X in the Karaj warehouse”. A WMS says “80 units in aisle A, rack 3 and 40 in aisle C, rack 7 — pick the older lot first”.

Typical capabilities

  • Hierarchical locations (aisle, rack, shelf)
  • Put-away and picking strategies
  • Wave picking for high order volumes
  • Barcode scanners and sometimes RFID
  • Cycle counting

Example

In a distribution centre, the WMS groups the morning’s orders and sequences the pick path so each aisle is walked only once.

WMS in Fidar

Fidar’s Inventory & WMS module includes hierarchical locations, lots, serials and FEFO in its design and is on the roadmap.
