What is BOM?

Bill of Materials

Definition

BOM — a bill of materials — is the structured list of every material, part and sub-assembly needed to make one unit of a product, with the quantity of each.

Single- and multi-level BOMs

In a single-level BOM the product is made directly from materials. In a multi-level BOM some components are sub-assemblies with their own BOM — an air-conditioner is made from a “housing”, and the housing from sheet metal and screws.

Typical fields on a BOM line

  • Item code and name
  • Quantity per unit and unit of measure
  • Scrap allowance
  • Operation or work centre where the item is consumed

Example

ItemQuantity per air-conditioner
Compressor1
Metal housing (sub-assembly)1
Refrigerant0.8 kg
M6 screw12
