What is MRP II?

Manufacturing Resource Planning

Definition

MRP II — manufacturing resource planning — extends MRP beyond materials to include machine capacity, labour and the financial consequences of the production plan.

From MRP to MRP II

MRP only asks “which materials are we short of?”. But materials can be available while work centres are fully booked. MRP II closes that loop: capacity per work centre, shifts and costs are planned too, so the schedule matches reality on the shop floor.

Components of MRP II

  • Material requirements planning
  • Capacity requirements planning (CRP)
  • Shop-floor control and production reporting
  • Cost estimation and the plan’s financial impact

Example

MRP shows materials for 400 units are covered, but capacity planning reveals the assembly line can only handle 300 in week two — so the planner adds a shift or splits the delivery.

MRP II in Fidar

Fidar’s Manufacturing & MRP module covers both materials and work-centre capacity and is on the roadmap. ERP grew out of MRP II by extending the same approach to the whole company.
