What is BI?

Business Intelligence

Definition

BI — business intelligence — is the set of methods and tools that turn a company’s raw data into reports, dashboards and analysis people can use to make decisions.

Common components

  • Report builder: pick a source, fields, filters and grouping
  • Pivot tables: multi-dimensional summaries
  • Dashboards: several indicators and charts on one page
  • Alerts: notifications when an indicator leaves its range

Operational vs analytical reporting

Operational reports answer today’s questions (“which invoices are overdue?”). Analytical reports show trends (“how did sales this quarter compare with the same quarter last year?”).

Example

Instead of merging reps’ spreadsheets, the sales manager has a dashboard showing the pipeline, conversion rate and revenue forecast live.
